Last year, Katie made it very clear that she wanted to play fiddle, just like her big brother, Clark. We gave her a cheapy, broken, 1/8 size fiddle that was being used as a wall decoration to play with. After she demolished that, we waited to see if her interest was genuine or a phase.
She clung to her dream, and so we purchased a ¼ size fiddle last spring from Craigslist and started looking for a teacher. Our first choice was, of course, Pete Martin. However, Pete thought it best that Katie get some Suzuki training first. So, I was able to find a Suzuki teacher, Suzanne Collette, right down the street from Mills Music in Bothell where Kelli takes lessons with Pete for mandolin. Very convenient! And she is very willing to work with us on songs so that we can get Katie playing with us!
One of the things we were working on with Katie was her being able to hold the fiddle up with just her neck/cheek (not using her left hand for support). We kept trying to rig up some support made of sponges and a Kun. But to no avail. I was working on it with her last Friday when she became so frustrated that she told me she did not want to play fiddle. That was a good indication that we needed to stop for the day.
I consulted with big brother Clark on what to do. He suggested we call up the fiddle shop where we purchased Clark’s current fiddle and see if they could help. Clark bought his fiddle at Lasley & Russ Violins. It is located in Ballard. I called them up and they were very friendly and welcoming. They offered that we could come to the shop and see if there was a way to help Katie.
So, Katie, Kelli, Camden and I headed to Ballard and found the shop. The owner, Duane Lasley, took one look at the case we were carrying and one look at Katie and told us the fiddle was too big for her. When we took it out and checked for sure, we could see how right he was. When I bought the fiddle last spring, I just didn’t figure she would need such a small fiddle, but after talking with Duane, I could see that I had bought a fiddle that was too big for her. (I do this with clothes for my kids too…always buying things too big!) He brought out a 1/10 size fiddle and she held it perfectly with her chin and with no strain! Hooray!
The way to tell what size is needed for a child is to hold the fiddle as if he/she is going to play--under the left cheek, and see if the child can curl his/her fist up and around the scroll. Katie did this easily with the 1/10 size fiddle.
We decided to rent the 1/10 and put the ¼ in storage until Katie grows into it. The way my kiddos grow, I am sure it won’t be long before we are pulling it back out of storage for her!
Katie is back to wanting to play fiddle and now practicing how to hold her bow. Her new little fiddle is just as cute as she is! She just can’t wait to “play in the band!”
Upcoming performance….Clayton will be playing in the Dusty Strings Banjo Contest on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 1pm at Dusty Strings in Fremont. Camden will be backing him up and the rest of our fam will be cheering him on!! Hope to see you there!
