Wow! What a week! Our dear friend and talented band member, Kathryn England, graduated from high school this week! Congratulations to Kathryn and her family! Kathryn graduated from Providence Classical Christian school in Lynnwood. She and five other seniors had their graduation ceremony Thursday night. It was a wonderful ceremony with lots of laughter, joy and some tears too. Watching her go through the steps of finishing up her high school years has been a delight. We all love Kathryn very much and really enjoy having her with us in the band. It has been very fun!
Graduation is very interesting. It is a one-way door. As you walk through it, you are permanently leaving the first part of your life--your childhood and teen years, and entering the next--your young adult years. Many decisions come up in these young adult years...education choices, career choices, marriage, etc. It is a stage-setting time for most people's lives, full of reminiscing and anticipating.
A graduation is often full of bittersweet feelings--happy to be done with all that work, but getting ready for even more in the fall. Anticipating making new friends, but intending to keep the old. Feeling free and ready to be on your own, but also being tied to a scholarship GPA, or tuition payment. Choosing a career path, but seeing endless options in how to invest your life. Cherishing time with your parents, but also looking forward to "being on your own." It is a grand and exciting time.
Kathryn will be going to Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA, in August. We are going to miss her so much. BUT, we are not going to dwell on that because we looking forward to a great summer season of singing and playing bluegrass together. We still have lots of time and fun yet to be had before August!
So, with all that, here's another video from our Folklife performance featuring Kathryn singing "Keep Your Feet on the Ground."
